Paradox Interactive, the publisher of games like Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV, almost cancelled their vampire-themed game Vampire The Masquerade – Bloodlines. They decided to cancel it after a fan campaign but they are now considering bringing it back.
Paradox Interactive almost cancelled Vampire The bloodlines 2 in trouble. This would have been a huge loss to the gaming community.
The development of Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 has been very concerning. In October 2015, Paradox Interactive purchased White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games, giving them access to IPs such as Vampire: The Masquerade, World of Darkness, and Werewolf: The Apocalypse.
After a lengthy campaign of teases, clues, and hidden websites, Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2 was eventually unveiled at GDC 2019 little over three years later.
The game was supposed to be published in Q1 2020, however it was postponed many times before that, and then Hardsuit Labs, the project’s original creator, was kicked off.
Since the change of developers, Paradox Interactive has been rather quiet on the project’s progress, and we still don’t know who will be taking over development, but we do have a few intriguing tidbits from an interview CEO Fredrik Wester gave to Swedish website Avanza.
When asked about Paradox’s future participation with the RPG genre and whether or not it would continue to develop Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, Wester says that the company will “watch how Bloodlines 2 is accepted before we spend the next major money in the genre.”
“I don’t want to shut any doors since there is a big need for excellent role-playing games, but I’d want to see what happens, what we can accomplish, and how Bloodlines is accepted.”
During the elimination of Hardsuit Labs, it seems that Paradox nearly cancelled the production of Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines 2, but Wester claims that an internal “pitch was compelling enough” to keep it going.
“We had a lengthy evaluation when we took the game from the original creator to determine whether we should terminate the game or continue it further,” Wester said. “We were ready to shut down the production at that point, but we received a ‘pitch’ that we felt was compelling enough to keep going, so we kept going, and now we have great hopes that it will be a fantastic game that fulfills the players’ expectations.”
Wester wouldn’t reveal much about the new developer taking over from Hardsuit Labs, but he did add that it’s “a highly renowned and skilled developer” who’s worked on a variety of games in the past.
We don’t know how much of the original material will be kept, although Wester did mention that a lot of the assets and content that was put together would be utilized, so the game doesn’t seem to have been completely rebuilt.
However, we’re still a long way off from its release, with Wester saying of a rumored 2023 release date, “We have a while left, so you could say.”
