Is there really a thing as art that is too horrifying for the human heart to bear? Yes, according to an article in the Art Newspaper. The concept of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s 9/11 monument, even 20 years later, was deemed “too emotionally charged” by the Guggenheim Museum’s head curator. (I’ll get to it in a minute.)

Breathe Ghosts Blind is a three-part sculpture by Cattelan that begins with a Carrara marble man figure hunched like a fetal next to a dog. This is the Breathe section. Then there are the Ghosts, which are stuffed birds. Last but not least. A soaring black resin model of a nuclear warhead shooting skyward, as if escaping from a silo, dominates the scene. This is referred as as blindness.
When presented with such a concept in 2017, Guggenheim head curator Nancy Spector said it was “too emotionally charged.” Cattelan’s notion of portraying the tragedy might be “poison, especially in New York City,” as she noted in an article for the Milan exhibition.

But wait, there’s nothing in Cattelan’s three-part composition that conjures up the 2,606 individuals who died when the Twin Towers collapsed. The same may be said about the massive warhead. The assault was not nuclear in nature. The stuffed pigeons and the guy laying in a fetal posture close to a dog don’t elicit the same level of fear.
It’s all much too incomprehensible to be angry about.
Isn’t it strange, however, that the Guggenheim didn’t hesitate to show Cattelan’s gold toilet, even buying it for its collection, but was hesitant to show his tribute to a terrorist attack? Perhaps Spector was thinking about Eric Fischl’s artwork “Tumbling Woman,” which depicts people who leapt to their deaths from the collapsing buildings.
Because Manhattanites couldn’t bear the sight of Fishcl’s work, it had to be removed from its position at Rockefeller Center. Cattelan’s monument, on the other hand, poses no threat of disgust. It’s much too difficult to read for that.

Catellan said the piece may be “evocative of many things,” not simply the tragedy in New York, when asked why he’s exhibiting Breathe Ghosts Blind in Milan. Okay, I confess that watching his warhead rise as though from a silo reminded me of a scene from the 1987 sci-fi film Project X.
The premise of the film included the US Air Force teaching chimpanzees to run flight simulators before exposing them to fatal amounts of radiation in order to determine how long a human pilot can live in order to respond. An atomic bomb slowly rises through a trap door in the floor behind the chimp, adding to the tension.
That’s a fantastic picture! Breathe Ghosts Blind by Cattelan is clearly a flop.
Unfortunately, commemorative exhibitions at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York have likewise come to an end. According to Art Daily, all special exhibitions have been canceled due to low attendance as a consequence of the epidemic.
It’s all ridiculous.
One last thought about Cattelan. I view him as Italy’s Damien Hirst of dead-animals-in-formaldehyde renown, with his gold toilet, banana duct-taped to wall, and now his tribute to terror. He’ll go to any length to get attention.
