The recent influenza pandemic has been a wake-up call for many industries, including the future of work. In this blog post, we explore how the global pandemic is affecting the world’s workforce and what it means for the future of work.

What are the most significant changes to your workplace rules since the outbreak?
We quickly implemented the basic Covid procedures, which included obligatory masks, temperature taking, worker separation on the line, and case tracking, as did most manufacturers.
When we polled our salaried workers across the globe in May 2020, they said they were satisfied we were taking the correct steps in terms of health and safety initiatives. The overwhelming majority of individuals who worked virtually claimed they easily adjusted to new methods of working and felt productive. Virtual employment was generally a good experience for them, with fewer than a third saying they were ready to return to the office. This provided us with a window of opportunity to create a more flexible work approach that put “People + Technology” at the heart of our business model.
One-third of our office-based workers work in a Stanley Black & Decker physical facility, one-third work completely virtual, and one-third flex their time between on-site and virtual work. This allows for greater freedom in terms of when, where, and how work is completed.
Among our efforts are the following:
• More open, collaborative individual workstations and conference room space, as well as phonebooth-style chambers for private conversations, are being added. Even for CEOs, our space will feature much fewer enclosed cubicles and conventional closed-door offices.
• We’re using immersive collaboration technologies to make the experience as fair as possible, regardless of where individuals work. Instead of being off to the side on a wall, we’ll bring virtual participants to the middle of conference room tables.
What are some of the greatest challenges you’ll encounter when your workers return to work or adopt a new working model?
People have faced many personal and professional difficulties as a result of the epidemic.
We’ve enhanced our wellness services, such as mental health support, anxiety and stress management, and homework aid and resilience programs for parents with children at home. As we navigate this next stage of the epidemic, we’re doing all we can to make sure we have the benefits, skills, and resources we need, particularly enabling our leaders to have regular, empathic discussions with their team members to remain connected to their continuing needs.
We developed guiding principles that promote our culture throughout Stanley Black & Decker, in addition to our enhanced health services. These pledges are intended to foster a culture of mutual respect, inclusiveness, participation, and well-being for everyone. They are as follows:

What do you believe the work environment of the future will be like?
People are more engaged, higher productive, and more committed to the organization’s mission when they are given the freedom to work in a way that meets their holistic requirements. We work hard to provide our employees with the tools they need to succeed.
Our hybrid approach entails reorganizing our workspace to allow for more effective and simultaneous collaboration with colleagues who may be sitting a few feet away or thousands of miles away.
Workplace flexibility demands have changed and increased. We think that by using a hybrid strategy, we will be able to keep the benefits of virtual work while remaining focused on the strategic objectives that have made us successful.
In addition to the physical changes, the future of work will seem like a more caring and compassionate environment where employee well-being is emphasized, with a smaller office footprint and hybrid model where not every employee is in the office or onsite everyday. We recognize the pressures and difficulties that our employees encounter, and we are dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, inclusiveness, participation, and well-being for everyone.
